Basic Table Manners to Teach Your Kids

1. 饭前洗手:Come to the table with clean hands and face. Washing your hands is the best way to stop germs from spreading. Germs on your hands can easily get into your body if you don't wash your hands.

2. 不玩玩具:No toys or fooling around at table. You can play with your toys later.

3. 做个小帮手:Ask if there is anything you can do. Whether at home or someone else's house, always ask the grown-up if you can help do anything to get ready for dinner. If setting the table, remember the fork goes on the left and the knife goes on the right.

4. 耐心等待:If the meal is not buffet style, then wait until everyone is served before eating. It shows consideration.

5. 坐姿端正:Sit with your legs down. Don't sit with your knees hunched up against the table. Sit up and do not hunch over your plate; wrists or forearms can rest on the table, or hands on lap.

6. 不玩餐具:It's not nice to wave your fork around. Don't gesture with your spoon.

7. 优雅地喝汤:Don’t slurp your soup. Eating over the plate helps in case there is a little spill.

8. 细嚼慢咽:Take small bites. Never stuff your mouth full of food. Never, ever chew with your mouth open. Chewing with your mouth closed and not talking when your mouth is full are two cardinal rules of good table manners. Eat slowly and don't gobble up the food. Someone took a long time to prepare the food, enjoy it slowly. Slowly means to wait about 5 seconds after swallowing before getting another forkful.

9. 不发表差评:It's not nice to say bad things about the food. It will hurt someone's feelings. If you really don't like something, you may say "I don't really care for this.”

10. 低声交流:Use your indoor voice.

11. 不离开餐桌: Stay at the table until finished. No wiggling or wandering around. If you need to get up during the meal, politely ask to be excused and return to the table as quickly as possible.

12. 不剔牙: Picking teeth is private behavior. We don't do it in front of other people. If a piece of food gets stuck between your teeth and it bothers you much, excuse yourself and go to the restroom to pick.

13. 不打断别人:Do not interrupt when someone else is talking. Wait your turn to speak.

14. 传递食物:Don't reach over someone's plate for something. Politely ask that the item to be passed to you. For example, "Please pass the potatoes.”

15. 餐巾的使用:Always use a napkin to dab your mouth, which should be on your lap when not in use. Remember, dab your mouth only. Do not wipe your face or blow your nose with a napkin, both are gross. Excuse yourself from the table and go to the restroom to do those things. Place your napkin in your lap when you sit down. Put the napkin on the chair, not the table if you need to use the restroom.

16. 放回餐椅:Always push your chair in when finished. When you get up from the table, you should push your chair back against the table.

17. 不用手抓:Eat with a fork unless the food is meant to be eaten with fingers. Only babies eat with fingers.

18. 表达感谢:When eating at someone's home or a guest of someone at a restaurant, always thank the host and tell them how much you enjoyed it. At least say that you liked the dinner or mention a specific item that was particularly tasty, i.e. the dessert was great. Again, someone took time, energy, and expense to prepare the food, so show your appreciation.
